Fresh tax notices to be served on 1 lakh property owners in Gurgaon

The MCG is the process of issuing fresh house tax notices to around one lakh property owners in Gurgaon, after noticing discrepancies in their self-assessment forms.

These owners had already paid up their house tax, after self-assessment under a scheme by the civic body. But, after irregularities cropped up during an internal scrutiny, officials said they have decided to send them fresh notices — detailing all previous payments made and the dues pending against their property. Already 35,000 notices have been dispatched.

“The property tax policy was changed in October 2013. last year.

When the previous policy was in force, many owners had self-assessed their property and paid tax. However, during scrutiny, it was found that details in around one lakh forms were incorrect and therefore we decided to send the notices again,” said an official.

He added: “Since a number of anomalies in the self assessment form submitted by the one lakh residents have been spotted, this time we thought of calculating the tax and sending them the notice. Since certain relief that was provided in the previous policy is not there in the new one, the tax amount is on the higher side.”

In fact, the MCG’s tax officials had last month stumbled upon crores of unaccounted rupees. An internal audit of the civic body revealed an excessive of Rs 70 crore in its kitty. A further investigation revealed that while people had submitted their taxes, the MCG was clueless from where it came from. A probe is on.

The new commissioner, Vikas Yadav, has stressed that even though, unlike the municipal corporation of Faridabad, the MCG is cash rich, still the emphasis would be to recover all the pending property tax. He said that recovery of property tax and money from mobile tower companies and advertisement agencies would be his prime objective.
