Noida, Gr Noida may become India’s first smart cities

The twin cities in UP may become India’s first smart cities, if everything goes as per plan. This is according to Noida and Greater Noida Authorities chairman Rama Raman.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government may have just announced the development of 100 new smart cities in its first budget last month, but Raman told employees of the Noida Authority on Thursday that 70% of the parameters have already been achieved by Noida and Greater Noida. He also asked the employees to cooperate with him to help meet the twin cities rest of the parameters.

“From Independence Day, the Noida Authority is offering residents a citizens’ portal. It is a big move towards making Noida as smart city of the country. Now Noida will get Ganga water supply. But, a lot still needs to be done in offering quality public transport facility and in terms of metro line expansion. We are also working on the concept of recycling the garbage of the city,” Raman told TOI.

“Noida is only city in the country that has laid down sewage and drainage network in its 82 villages. The twin cities also has wide roads, hospitals, parks, Formula One track and metro connectivity,” he said.

Raman said that the Authority’s idea “is to become eligible for the central government’s fund earmarked for a smart city”.

“These two cities deserve a smart city fund because we have already developed 70% of the facilities in past three decades. If we manage to get Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre, then we will invest that money into building even better infrastructure, including metro,” he added.
