Bids sought for first smart city on Delhi Mumbai corridor

Delhi/NCR
Five years after work started on building smart cities along the DelhiMumbai Industrial Corridor, the government has moved past the conceptualization stage and has finally sought bids for building core infrastructure.

The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC) on Thursday invited bids for trunk infrastructure, setting the stage for construction of core projects in the proposed greenfield city in the PithampurDhar-Mhow Investment Region in Madhya Pradesh. The initial projects, sources said, are estimated to be worth around Rs 300 crore.

On February 6 evening, the DMICDC Trust cleared three projects for a second city in Dholera (Gujarat), which includes roads and utilities, administrative building and water treatment plant in the first stage. Along with com mon effluent and sewerage treatment plants, these projects are estimated to be worth Rs 2,650 crore.

With the green light from the trust, DMICDC is planning to seek bids later this month. Next up will be bids for similar infrastructure facilities in Shendra (Maharashtra), the third city on which bids are expected to be sought by the end of the financial year, sources said.

They added that work on the Integrated Industrial Township in Greater Noida is also progressing and some of the work will be bid out by the end of March. A fifth project is the Global City near Gurgaon where the master plan is being prepared. DMICDC is keen that the trunk infrastructure in these three cities is ready over the next three years so that work on commercial projects and factories can commence, followed by residential properties. The government is hoping that the private sector will take over once the core infrastructure is in place.

Although the government is targeting 100 smart cities, a lot of them will be retrofitting or upgrading of existing ones, while the proposed cities along with the industrial corridor are greenfield projects. In India, only a handful of new cities have been built post-independence which includes Chandigarh, Gandhinagar and, recently, Naya Raipur.

Bids have been invited for trunk infrastructure, setting the stage for construction of core projects in the proposed greenfield city in Pithampur-Dhar-Mhow region in Madhya Pradesh.
