GMC notice to 800 house tax defaulters

The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued notices to over 800 defaulting property owners in the city, asking them to pay their property taxes without any delay. The GMC has set January 24 as the deadline for defaulters to clear their dues.

Officials said impounding notices will be issued against defaulters who do not clear their dues by January 24. The list of defaulters has been drawn up by sorting the top 10 defaulters in each ward of the city. The defaulters belong to different areas in all five zones of the GMC. They comprise owners of all categories of properties - residential, commercial and institutional.

The sum total of dues from all the defaulters named on the list has exceeded Rs 1 crore. According to GMC officials, a number of civic and development works planned in the city are in limbo owing to non-payment of dues, which has forced the corporation to issue impounding notices.

"Most of these defaulters have not been paying their taxes for several years and that has resulted in the municipal corporation running short of funds. Action will be initiated against those who do not clear their dues in time. We will begin by impounding their bank accounts whereby access will be blocked to them till the taxes are cleared," said additional municipal commissioner D K Sinha.
