Ambience residents to protest outside complex

Twenty four days into their open-air protest inside Ambience Lagoon, negotiations with the developer having fallen through, embittered residents have decided to take their protest outside their complex. They said now protest in front of a prominent government office.

Residents have been involved in an acrimonious battle with the developer over control of their security and maintenance. They failed to arrive at a mutually agreeable solution in meetings with the developer on November 23, deputy commissioner last week and the director general of Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) on December 12.

"We have to take our dharna outside to draw the Authority's attention. For how long will elderly women sit outside in this cold to demand our legitimate right to run our own maintenance?" asked Sanjay Lal, vice president of ALARWA (Ambience Lagoon Apartment Residents Welfare Association).

ALARWA members had snatched control of the security on November 22, after guards contracted by the developer went on strike. Thereafter, a team of residents, mostly women, have stood guard round the clock at the entrance to prevent the developer from taking back control of the security.

The developer claimed maintenance can be legally transferred only to LRACA (Lagoon Residential Apartment Complex Association), the registered body. "I can't hand maintenance over to an illegitimate body. If they were unhappy with the services, they should have gone to court," Raj Singh Gehlot, chairman, Ambience Group, said.
