Top complaints by tenants in Delhi

The tenant-landlord equation is well known! As a tenant, you may pay more for that extra dose of independence from your landlord but alas! We reached out to some tenants and they shared some of the most popular complaints! From curfew timings to water and electricity to I-want-to-know-all attitude. Isn't it but natural to expect a little freedom from your nosy landlord/lady?

Benita Itty, social worker

“Living on rent means you have to put up with a lot of tantrums of the landlord. Since he is letting out some space to you, he will make sure that you owe him that bit of courtesy. I recently had a tiff regarding parking space. Given that I was paying the house rent, he wanted me to pay extra for the parking space!”

Stuti Singh, Corporate Communications professional

“A nosy landlord is a strict no-no! But this is what usually happens. Paying your rent regularly doesn’t insure you against all the nosiness. They want to know who is coming or who is going, when, what and why!”

Amrit Sinha, Analytics professional

“Water supply is another problem. If you happen to complain about water shortage he seems assume it is his birthright to conserve water!” adds Sinha.“You would face the music if you happen to be a boy! The first thing landlords demand from bachelors is- No girls, no drinks, no late night parties. Youngsters do not want to be dictated and landlords do exactly that- tag them as playboys! Not all bachelors date and dine late night. Who said it’s a man’s world?”

Neetu Kurian, Performance Marketing- App Development professional

“One car parked in front of the house can prevent guests from coming to the landlord house. That is exactly what you can make out if you hear landlords scream at you if by chance you need to quick park your car for a few minutes.”

“Also, if you have given him a security deposit, he will find out 101 ways how not to return that to you. So anything that remains after his deductions for maintenance, for how the wall paint got scratched to vacating on short notice to how the kitchen looks messy to some bit deducted for how you spoilt his mood is exactly what you get!” adds Kurian.

Surabhi Shandilya, PR professional

“My landlady was very hesitant to let out her house to single women. Her concerns included boys hovering around the house to keep ogling at girls to modern girls keeping late office timings and disrespecting curfew hours. The most recent one would be when my landlady objected to what I was wearing!”

“Somehow even electricity bills seem to bother them and if they see a revolving fan in an unoccupied room, you are done for!”

Sakshi Vasudeva, Research student

“My security deposit was close to Rs 90,000 and I have had bitter experiences as many times I have shifted homes. Landlords make sure that they fine you for even trivial things like sticking pictures on the walls or hammering a nail in the wall to how the paint has lost its sheen over the years.”

“It is unfortunate that most people are biased. Being a Muslim I had a really tough time negotiating for a house on rent and this is partly a reason why I decided to buy a house. Everything used to get finalized but at the last moment, once they knew my name, they were averse to letting out. The most polite of such landlords that I have had to confront told me, “Yahan paani ka bahut problem hai, aap kisi aur colony me dekh lijiye.”

“However, there are a few broad minded landlords as well who do not differentiate on the basis of caste. Some of them have been my good friends till date.”

 Gaurav Singh, Doctor

“When I was preparing for my medical examinations, I used to live on rent. My landlord used to leave his pet dog at my place as though it were some pet crèche. The whole house had a bad stench and I couldn’t complain because he was the only landlord in the vicinity who used to let my friends in.”

Shubham Singh, Engineer

“I had a tough time when my landlord kept increasing the monthly rent. Again, he used to sarcastically point out, “Dekhe the friends ke saath ghumte hue.. lage raho etc.” It is almost as if he used to stalk me and knew all my whereabouts. I finally opted to shift out.”

Rinky Singh, E-commerce professional

“I lived in my last rental accommodation for almost three years and put up with a very unaccomodative landlord. All he was bothered about was the rent. The flat was termite infected, had a bad motor but he was never ready to get it repaired. All he kept saying was when he had more money in hand, he would get the repairs done. After many such issues, we decided to move out and that is when he refused to return the security deposit! We had to threaten him with a police complaint to get the money back!”
