Noida plans exclusive flats for elderly

The Noida Authority has decided to develop a residential facility for the elderly in the city, in a bid to provide senior citizens a safe and secure environment.

Officials said an area measuring 3,300 square metres has been earmarked for the proposed project in Sector 108. The housing project for the elderly would have some flats on sale, and others would be allotted free of cost to those belonging to the economically weaker section.

The move came after state chief secretary Alok Ranjan and officials of the department of women and child development gave a go-ahead to the housing project. "There are several senior citizens who are financially sound, but live alone and are vulnerable. They need to live in a secure environment, which is what we aim to provide. The project will also cater to those who cannot afford to pay for their lodging," an official of the Noida Authority said.

The housing facility would provide residents with food, medical help and recreational activities, the officials said, adding it would be equipped with round-the-clock security and also have 24-hour care for its residents.

However, according to the officials, the number of people that would be housed at the facility is yet to be decided. "We will lay down strict norms and guidelines for the selection of residents, so that those who are needy can be accommodated," the Authority official said.

"We are awaiting the details of the project from the government before inviting an expression of interest. Once we finalize the consultant for the project, the detailed project report, design and layout plan will be readied," the official added.

The UP government has also given its nod for building similar old-age homes in Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Faizabad, Pilibhit, Rae Bareli and Varanasi.
