Venkaiah Naidu, Minister Urban Development and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation put the agenda across in simple terms, “It is just like shaving. You have to do it dutifully everyday to keep yourself clean. Similarly, Swacch Bharat should be a duty you owe your country.”

This swacchta that we talk about in India would be definitely a step towards Smart Cities. P Muralidhar Rao, National General Secretary, BJP says, “One sector that can make a significant change in terms of Swacch Bharat is real estate.” Quite true! In fact the Kerala chapter of CREDAI came up with almost 65,000 apartments that have implemented the practice of zero disposal. On the other hand, Credai Pune trained construction workers to promote skilled use of construction mechanisms and technology.

In a later discussion on Smart Cities, Vibhav Kant Upadhyay, chairman, India Center Foundation said, “The vision of Smart Cities is more of a compulsion than a dream. In the last 60 years, there wasn’t as much development as we would have expected. Today, we have the opportunity to design how well we can use energy to promote sustainability.”

Trend watchers also put forward an example. For a Smart City to become a reality, smart government is as important as smart citizenry. When South Africa was to host the Commonwealth Games, it did so by creating a kind of satellite town and consequently, the nation came up with a new Smart City. If during the Commonwealth Games, this had been the case, we would already have had a smart satellite city that would complement Delhi.

Vishal Dhar, co-founder and president, marketing at iYogi, a company that has ventured into smart home technologies says, “A home is a building block of a city and therefore a direct co-relation. As smart home adoption increases, people start getting accustomed and demand a smart living experience overall, touching various aspects of a Smart City. Smart homes are synonymous with smart buildings and smart energy and therefore, are a definitive step towards making Smart Cities.”

With a vision in place, India can hope to get Swacch and Smart soon!
