Ghaziabad nod to 10% property tax hike

Delhi/NCR
If you own a house or a plot in Ghaziabad, be ready to shell out more property tax.

After 13 years, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to increase property rental value – the basis on which property tax is calculated – in the city by 10%. So, this will translate into a 10% hike in property tax.

Currently, the property rental value rates vary from Rs 1.20 per square feet in low-end colonies to Rs 4.50 per square feet in upscale localities. The decision to increase the property rental value was taken by the GMC in a board meeting on Wednesday.

Sources said that though the 12-member executive committee of the municipal corporation had proposed a 25% hike in property rental values, the board increased it by 10% only in the meeting as a number of councillors from various political parties opposed it.

Other important decisions taken by the board included formation of a committee to examine a proposal to revise water and sewer charges in Ghaziabad. Though the proposal was earlier passed by the executive committee, it has been deferred to the next board meeting due to intervention of some councillors.

“Now, a 10-member committee, comprising five senior officials of the GMC and five councilors, has been formed to examine the proposed structure of the revised charges. This committee has not been able to set a deadline to submit its report, but it is expected before the next board meeting,” said AK Gupta, additional municipal commissioner.

Clearance to the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to set up wi-fi systems in various areas of the city, renaming of certain public places of the city, removal of encroachments and fencing around Arthala Lake were among other proposals approved by the board.

Councillors passed a proposal paving the way for GDA to install WiFi systems in several locations across the city.

“GDA had sought permission from the municipal corporation to set up systems on certain roadsides to enable WiFi at several locations. This proposal was also cleared by the board,” said Mukesh Tyagi, spokesperson for the mayor.

Bylaws formed for imposition of taxes upon cable operators for using electricity poles of the municipal corporation were also cleared by the board, the sources said, adding proposals to strengthen various stretches of roads and laying of drains in between certain stretches were also passed by the board.

However, out of nearly 40 different proposals tabled in the board meeting, six were outright rejected.
