GDA to lease unsold properties for health units

The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has decided to lease its unsold properties - residential and commercial - to the district health department for running primary health care centres and health posts in the city.

GDA officials said the district health department had on Monday written to the civic body seeking space on rent to set up PHCs at 28 locations and upgraded health posts under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) at nine locations. The 28 locations include areas like Sahibabad, Shalimar Garden, Vijay Nagar, Karheda, Maharajpur, Khoda and Bhopura.

Chief medical officer of Ghaziabad, Dr Ajay Agarwal, said the department had asked for space following directions from the UP health department. "These directions were issued after we asked the state health department to provide us with more space to improve health infrastructure in the city," he said. The CMO said the health department would open the PHCs as soon as they are provided with space and there would be no delay. There is no fixed lease period for which the health department is asking for the spaces as the department has to run the PHCs permanently. Officials said the department is ready to pay rent and enter into normal lease agreements of 11 months each.

GDA officials said the health department had been scouting for two to four room properties on rent basis, but did not have the finances because of the high rates of rent in the city. They said that space would be provided to the department wherever available, saying that some of the areas in the list, like Khoda, do not come under GDA jurisdiction.

"A survey will be soon undertaken to determine the available inventory of space with us and match it with the requirements of the health department. The spaces will be provided to them on rent if it meets their needs. Housing inventory lying unsold with the Authority or commercial shops lying unsold will also be provided on rent," said DP Singh, officer-on-special duty, GDA.
