Fresh tax notices to Rs 3 lakh property owners

The MCG will issue fresh property tax notices to around three lakh property owners in the city for the financial years 2010-11 to 2014-15 from January 14. MCG officials said they expect to generate Rs 200 crore in revenue from the tax collection.

"We will start issuing these notices from Wednesday. The notice will mention the due date by which the residents will have to pay the tax. If they fail to do so, they will be penalized. If the property owner finds any discrepancies in the amount that has been calculated, the owner can bring it to our notice," said an MCG official.

The residents, however, will not be able to pay the tax online as the MCG is yet to provide a payment gateway option on its portal. Although the civic body had promised to launch the online facility long ago, residents complain that the portal does not function properly.

In order to aid the residents to pay the property tax easily, MCG said it would organize camps in various areas in the coming days where the residents would be able to pay tax. "We will publicize the information about these camps so that residents do not have to go all the way to the Citizen Facilitation Centre to pay the tax," he said.

However, residents in builder areas in New Gurgaon said they would not pay the tax until MCG takes over these areas from builders. An umbrella body of RWAs, Gurgaon Citizens Council (GCC) had also filed a petition in the high court saying MCG should first provide residents with services like water, roads, and streetlights, among others, before asking for property tax. "We have already filed a case in the high court saying we will not pay MCG till they take over our area. This notice is to misguide people. The next date of court hearing is in June and till then we will not pay tax to MCG," said RS Rathee, president, GCC.
