Delhi\'s Janak Puri votes for equal lifestyle

Janakpuri is one of those constituencies in Delhi which has its mention in both – the most preferred area for buying as well as renting properties. However, these two portray different stories.

Divided by the Pankha Road united by name, Janakpuri has two parts - one which is up-market with upper middle class population while the other part has areas which lack even the basic infrastructure such as roads, schools, grocery shops etc.

The difference is also visible in the realty prices. As per the data with Magcibricks, Janakpuri offers properties in a range of Rs 10,000-14,000 per sq ft while areas such as Chanakya Place and Jeewan Park, which are also unauthorised settlements boast of prices in the range of Rs 4,000-6,000 per sq ft.

“It is not about legalising our addresses, but about better amenities. We also deserve access to good roads, schools, drinking water and proper sewage system for living comfortably,”

Agenda for elections

Not only have all the three political parties promised regularising the illegal areas, the traditional anthem of ‘Bijli, paani or sadak’ is also still being echoed by the candidates who are contesting from here. Going by past history, little has been done in the past few years to address the grievances of the residents. However, this time people are confident as they are determined to see development.

“We are tired of hearing the same age-old promises. Now we want to see some action. The key determinant for deciding our leader is not how well he can speak but how well he performs and what is his vision,” says Lakhan Pal Singh, one of the active members of the local resident group in Mahindra Park.

However, residents living on the better side have less to demand as they are already enjoying a neat and clean neighborhood which has no open drains, a number of parks and township-like features.

In fact, BJP has been winning this seat for over 30 years hence it would be a matter of wait and watch whether the residents will vote for a change or not.
