3 underpasses among stalled big ticket projects to be cleared soon

Delhi/NCR
The new government is all set to take up big ticket projects in the city. A day after he returned from the oath-taking ceremony of the new chief minister, mayor Vimal Yadav met MCG commissioner Vikas Yadav on October 27 to discuss all projects that were stalled due to the poll model code of conduct. Among them is the Rs 750 crore project to build underpasses at three places – Rajeev Chowk, Signature Tower and Iffco Chowk. All three are crucial, as they would connect the old city to the new. Without any such provision at present, all three intersections witness huge traffic snarl-ups throughout the day.

According to the mayor, an estimate of Rs 510 crore has already been prepared by the chief engineer. The finance committee, which he heads, will pass the proposal within 10 days and sent to Chandigarh for final approval, he said. “There are many projects which got stuck for the past few months, ever since former commissioner Praveen Kumar was transferred and the election model code of conduct came into effect. For example, Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit had informed me that Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari had given his nod to the underpass project and even asked me to make preparations for its inauguration, but the model code had come into force by then and work came to a halt,” said Yadav.

“In today’s meeting with the MCG commissioner, I discussed this project and several others. I have been told that the work estimate will be forwarded to the MCG finance committee. I expect it to be cleared in the next 10 days. We will then send the file to the state government and I’m sure the new BJP chief minister will approve it at the earliest,” he added.

According to Yadav, the entire project is likely to cost around Rs 750 crore, of which MCG will bear 75% of the cost. The remainder will be borne by NHAI. During Kumar’s tenure, a private consultant had been hired to finalize the design of these underpasses. Officials claimed NHAI has approved the design but agreed to pay only 25% of the cost.
